2nd July 2017

Super Series, Jim Walsh Trophy

Silverstone GP

I had been looking forward to this one for a while.

Not only a rare chance to race on the Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit but to race for the Jim Walsh Trophy to celebrate 50 years of our amazing formula - Formula Ford.

You kind of felt the day was a bit special when we arrived in the drivers briefing and was asked to sign some photographs of the silverstone hero Jin Walsh and that we would need to be on the grid at lunchtime for some photographs with Jim and his championship winning car.

10.40am - Qualifying

With just 15 minutes to qualify I knew I would only have about 7 laps in total. Not very many considering this would be the first time out on the Grand Prix Circuit.

With no time to feel my way in to the track and learn it, I had to go for it from the off and learn the hard way. - which was interesting to say the least!!

I had qualified a respectable 14th from 19. I was pretty chuffed with that but a long way off the pace of the regulars up front.

A long break between qualifying and the race would be filled with a bacon sandwich and the Super Series photoshoot.

Of course this was also the perfect time to grab some ice creams with the wife and kids and enjoy some racing action from the other categories on display at Silverstone.

5.40pm - Race

Finally is was time to jump back in the car and head down to the grid.

I would start 14th and on the inside.

Lights out and I had a pretty good start I passed one car into the first corner but could only keep him behind untill I got on the straight were I seem to be lacking a small anount of power- I was totally defenceless and he retook position heading down into Stowe.

To be brutally honest I just couldn't stay with the boys in front and lap by lap they was pulling further and further away. It seemed my inexperience of the track was starting to show. I did however manage to hold off any competition from behind.

I finished the race where I started - 14th. I did find a couple more seconds during the race but it just wasn't enough.

All in all a brilliant day out with a great bunch of people. My race wasn't so good but what an experience, a day I will never forget.

Silverstone GP offers a great challenge and a load of new track for me to learn, a challenge I can't wait to tackle again !!!

Thanks to everyone that made the trip up to support me, another great weekend with friends and family.
